Phoenix Energy Area General Manager, Rabih Osta, participated in the international conference, ‘Lebanon's Caux Round Table: Is Moral Capitalism Possible?’, at Notre Dame University (NDU) - Louaize on 8 March. The conference celebrated the progress achieved by Lebanon’s Caux Round Table movement.
Osta highlighted the role renewable energy solutions and waste-to-energy systems play in decreasing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions during a panel discussion entitled ‘The Paris 2015 Global Agreement on Climate Change: Challenges and Opportunities for the Energy and Waste Sectors in Lebanon’. The panel was moderated by Omar Sakr, Lecturer at NDU Faculty of Business Administration & Economics; Dr. Sophia Ghanimeh, Assistant Professor at NDU Faculty of Engineering also served as a panelist.
Osta discussed dominant sources of non-renewable energy; barriers arising from insufficient legislation, economic and political instability; monopolies; and inadequate understanding of environmental impact. Osta also emphasized impacts increasing adoption of renewable energy solutions in Lebanon, including Lebanon’s national financing mechanism, National Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Action (NEERA) initiated by the Central Bank (Banque du Liban), and supportive legislation passed in 2014 and 2015. Lastly, Osta presented the environmental impacts of Phoenix Energy’s initiatives, related to the installation of solar PV systems, solar water heaters, biomass boilers, absorption chillers, and waste-to-energy systems.
Osta’s participation in Lebanon’s Caux Round Table conference supports Phoenix Energy’s sustainability objective to engage educational institutions and local communities to spread awareness about renewable energy solutions.
