United Way honors Interstate Container with the “Spirit of the Shore” award 2012 for “excellence and leadership in community compassion, volunteerism, and overall philanthropic community service”. United Way of the Lower Eastern Shore awarded the Cambridge-based corrugated packaging manufacturer during the annual meeting which took place in May 2013.
According to the award citation, Interstate Container works tirelessly to inspire other companies and individuals in Dorchester County, and on the Eastern Shore, to “give, advocate, and volunteer” for their communities. More specifically, United Way selected Interstate Container for its contribution, ‘taking the LIVE UNITED campaign to a whole new level’.
“Interstate Container is a shining example of a company having a community-wide impact through both their corporate actions and the compassionate day-to-day activities of their employees,” said Kathleen Momme, Executive Director of the United Way of the Lower Eastern Shore. “They are so deserving of the ‘Spirit of the Shore’ award for all of their hard work to improve Dorchester County and make the Eastern Shore a stronger community.”
Past ‘Spirit of the Shore’ winners include Perdue Farms, Delmarva Power, Pepsi, Peninsula Regional Medical Center, WBOC-TV 16, Avery Hall Insurance and last year’s recipient, The Daily Times.
United Way praised Interstate Container for its tireless commitment to supporting local community needs, calling them a “staple in our annual Top 25” fundraising leaders and citing their “caring, compassionate, and hardworking, as well as smiling faces – undoubtedly a reflection of their leadership and corporate values”.
For the past six years, Interstate Container employees have raised over $160,000 for United Way’s LIVE UNITED campaign, organized United Way ‘Days of Caring’, and attended fundraising events regularly. The corrugated manufacturer even went so far as to contract a local artist to paint a 420 ft2 LIVE UNITED mural inside their plant to inspire them as they do their work.
“This recognition from United Way is extremely gratifying for us. There is a strong alignment between our company’s core values and United Way’s compassion and commitment to improving the lives of local community residents,” said Pete Bugas, Interstate Container General Manager. “Interstate Container has always emphasized to its employees that ‘how we treat people is as important as making and delivering a quality product’. We care deeply about our community and about giving back. We work extremely hard to be attentive to local needs. But most of all we let our actions speak for us. This makes United Way a true ally of ours within the community, and that’s what makes this award so meaningful for everyone at Interstate Container.”
