On 12 November 2013, Phoenix Energy and Our Lady of Lebanon Sanctuary organized a gathering at Beithania in Harissa, Lebanon to promote environmental conservation. During the event, Phoenix Energy and Our Lady of Lebanon Sanctuary celebrated the success of the initial phase of the ‘Harissa goes Green’ project, which included the installation of eco-friendly biomass boilers running on olive husks rather than diesel.

Keserwan municipalities, including Ajaltoun, Daraoun, Harissa, Batha, Ghosta, and Bzommar, also signed a cooperation protocol with Phoenix Energy and Phelippolis a non-profit organization . The protocol supports the local community and encourages use of alternative power resources and sustainable water and home heating solutions, as well as shift to natural resources instead of petrochemical power. During the event, Phoenix energy displayed a biomass boiler, solar water heater, and PV power system for attendees to view.

‘Harrisa Aal Tabiaa’ (Harissa goes Green) Project

One year ago Our Lady of Lebanon Sanctuary – Harissa teamed up with Phoenix Energy to install three 100 KW biomass boilers to replace existing diesel boilers. The project ROI was less than one year with savings of $80,000 surpassing the initial cost of $70,000. The boilers also eliminated carbon monoxide (CO) emissions and reduced carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by 271.4 Tons annually.

The second phase of the ‘Harissa goes Green’ project will include the installation of a photovoltaic (PV) power system partnered with a shift to LED lighting. The project aims to light the Our Lady of Lebanon – Harissa parking lot more effectively, while decreasing energy consumption by over 35,500 KW/year and offering savings of over $7,500/year.

‘Harrisa Aal Tabiaa’ (Harissa goes Green) & Keserwan Cooperation Protocol Event

The ‘Harissa goes Green’ event brought together the Keserwan Al Foutouh community, including municipalities and mayors, universities and schools, and public figures from clubs, hotels, resorts, hospitals and monasteries, as well as other invitees of Our Lady of Lebanon Sanctuary and Phoenix Energy. The event featured detailed presentations discussing ‘Harissa going Green’ project, as well as the specifications, uses, and advantages of renewable energy solutions.

Father Younan Obeid, Rector of Our Lady of Lebanon Sanctuary – Harissa, inaugurated the gathering, while, Fady Fayad, Phelippolis General Manager, presented speakers.

Speeches:

Father & Doctor Khalil Alwan, Vice Rector of Our Lady of Lebanon Sanctuary – Harissa, spoke about his personal connection with mother nature and that he is witnessing how nature is suffering. He promoted use of renewable energy at Our Lady of Lebanon Sanctuary – Harissa. Father Alwan also discussed how Our Lady of Lebanon Sanctuary restructured their administration, in order to create an organizational structure which helped them work with Phoenix Energy and install a biomass boiler at 2 years ago.

Rabih Osta, Phoenix Energy General Manager, discussed the installation of eco-friendly biomass boilers, solar water heaters, and photovoltaic (PV) power systems at the sanctuary. Osta highlighted how the project will reduce energy consumption, dependency on generators, diesel use, and pollution, as well as offer Our Lady of Lebanon Sanctuary substantial cost savings annually.

During the presentation, Osta also discussed how Phoenix Energy transforms waste from olive farms to a renewable energy source called EcoEnergy. Biomass boilers use EcoEnergy and tree waste as fuel, while solar water heaters and PV panels capitalize on energy from the sun.

Neemat Frem, Association of Lebanese Industrialists President & INDEVCO President & CEO, stressed that “we are stepping forward towards encouraging investment in renewable energy in Lebanon.” He further emphasized that Lebanon possesses two rare assets: humans, capable of leveraging on research and knowledge; and natural resources, such as abundance of sunlight for over 8 months a year.

Frem also highlighted how it is important to transform challenges to opportunities, using the example of how Phoenix Energy solved olive producers’ soil fertility problems by transforming olive husks (waste) to a renewable energy source in order to fuel biomass boilers.

Frem also mentioned how production and distribution of renewable energy will be decentralized, independent, and private in order to reduce import costs, while protecting the environment and helping Lebanese consumers provide energy to meet their needs. Frem hopes to expand the horizons of renewable energy application and implementation to serve the community, in particular the needs of civil society, including academic institutions and hospitals, in addition to other sectors in Lebanon, such as industry and agriculture.
