Sanita, a leading consumer packaged goods company in Lebanon, recently installed a 1 MW solar PV project in its industrial complex in Zouk Mosbeh. The rooftop system was designed and executed by Phoenix Energy to provide renewable energy for Sanita’s production of such products as Happies baby diapers, Private feminine hygiene products, and Elegance adult diapers.

This initiative reflects Sanita’s environmental sustainability objective to reduce energy consumption from fossil fuel sources. Lebanon’s power plants, producing 1500 MW of electricity, lag in meeting the national demand for 2500 MW. Viable alternatives in the Sun Belt, with an average of 300 days of sunshine per year, solar PV systems circumvent electrical infrastructure problems in both production and power distribution which result in frequent shortages and blackouts that affect local industry.

Sanita’s solar PV system reduces greenhouse gas emissions by 1084 tons per year. Sanita’s solar PV system reduces greenhouse gas emissions by 1209 tons per year. This reduction is equivalent to C02emissions generated from electricity used by 179 homes for one year and carbon sequestered by over 31,300 tree seedlings grown for 10 years. Beyond powering Sanita’s manufacturing plant, excess power is shifted to the Electricité du Liban (EDL) national electricity grid.
