The Association Française de Normalisation (AFNOR) has certified Interstate Paper Industries’ jumbo tissue rolls (reference ACHL2 and ESTL2), produced in Sadat City, Egypt, as EU Ecolabel products as of May 2017 (EU Ecolabel: FR/004/016). These Jumbo rolls are manufactured into economy-grade paper towels and toilet tissue.
According to the European Commission, “The EU Ecolabel is a label of environmental excellence that is awarded to products and services meeting high environmental standards throughout their lifecycle: from raw material extraction to production, distribution, and disposal.”
The certification for these Tissue Paper products signifies that Interstate Paper Industries meets criteria guaranteeing the mill uses sustainable recycled fibers, reduces greenhouse gas and sulfur emissions, as well as energy consumption during production; and decreases water pollution through reduction of chlorine compound and organic waste.
Kamel Khalil, Interstate Paper Industries (IPI) Quality & HSE Manager, explains: “IPI has invested more than a year preparing for this certification. This process required examining, testing and documenting our industrial processes. Our motivation to obtain Ecolabel was driven by a desire to meet customer needs and to produce and market products that are kinder to the environment. We believe that Ecolabel will be increasingly important in the industries we serve.”
Established in 1992, the European Commission, in cooperation with a range of industry, consumer and environmental organizations, manages the EU Ecolabel program for over 30 non-food and non-medical product groups, which are renewed every 3-5 years.
